Lehigh Valley Zoo

Lehigh Valley Zoo

More Than Just a Zoo! Education, Preservation, Camps and More.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is a true local treasure. What began over a century ago as a private game preserve owned by General Harry C. Trexler, a local industrialist, now serves as safe, engaging and enlightening wildlife experience for guests of all ages. The Zoo truly demonstrates leadership in the cultural, scientific and conservation communities.

Interestingly, General Trexler played a significant role in saving the North American bison from extinction by providing a place where both bison and elk could roam freely undisturbed.  In 1935, the County of Lehigh took ownership of the Preserve, and in 1974, construction began on the Preserve’s 29-acre Children’s Zoo.  Read more Facts about the Lehigh Valley Zoo here.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is funded by a member-supported non-profit organization, Lehigh Valley Zoological Society, who assumed management of the Zoo, as well as the daily management of the bison and elk herd and the palominos in the 1,100-acre Trexler Nature Preserve in 2004.

One of the best ways to experience the Lehigh Valley Zoo and support the Lehigh Valley Zoological Society is to become a Member. Membership to the Zoo allows you to visit as much as you want, get special discounts to events and camps, as well as discounts to other zoos and aquariums across the country.

The Zoo also offers Volunteer Opportunities and a chance to help with special events, educational programs, and greet visitors. If you love animals and the outdoors, this a really great way to support an important local non-profit organization.

You can also Adopt an Animal at the Zoo! Your donation helps feed and care for more than 300 animal ambassadors at Lehigh Valley Zoo. Although the Zoo is a fun place to visit, the primary focus is education and conservation.

The Educational Programs at the Zoo are amazing. We are very lucky to have such a wealth of information and an abundance of resources available to us through the Zoo's educational programs. Children and adults can partake in a wide variety of learning experiences, workshops and camps. There are also Internship opportunities for those interested in furthering their education in the field.

Take a look at this Zoo Map, you can see that there is a lot of ground to cover, so visiting often is recommended. I know I never tire of seeing the animals!

If you are visiting the Lehigh Valley area or you live here, please be sure to support this local treasure, the Lehigh Valley Zoo, and help preserve it for years to come.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is surrounded by State Game lands and many beautiful homes! Click Here to see what homes are available for sale near the Lehigh Valley Zoo!
